Ever since I upgraded to Catalina the Time Machine intermittently fails, so each day I get the message: 'The backup disk is not in Mac Os Extended (Journaled) format, which is required. I have the exact same problem! On June 23 I upgraded my iMac to Catalina 10.15.5, going directly from macOS Mojave. Choose the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) option in the Format section. Give a suitable name for the external drive in the Name section. Select the Erase option from the displayed list. Right-click on the WD Easystore drive on the left panel. The advice from WD is to format Mac OS extended journaled and I have done this twice now. Launch Disk Utility from the Applications folder 4. Next, go to Finder > Applications > Utilities and open the Disk Utility. Wait for the new hard drive to be detected (its icon will appear on your Desktop). Now it tells me it has failed to complete the first backup. Connect Western Digital My Passport drive to your Mac. I have tried reformating my 2TB several times but it doesn’t work. I have two My Passports, one is 2TB and the other is 4TB, Neither of them will complete a backup since the Mojave upgrade.
